A long overdue update!

Hey people of the interwebs. I've neglected updating this for 3 months, but you can blame my Facebook Page for that.

I took a month off around January / February cause the year didn't start out too hott for me. Had a month-long flu that I thought I was cursed with for the rest of my life, and just didn't have the energy or motivation to work through it. Interacting with people, setting up shoots, setting up lights, editing, all that stuff takes energy so I just waved my hand at it and said "meh". So I opened my box of paints and starting creating traditional media portraits. Got so excited about it, and even submitted one of my pieces for a Carnival exhibition at Y Gallery, which to my delight, sold! As I got better, and as my need for photography punched me in the face, I can say that I'm happily back on point. All things happen for a reason I guess, and I'm glad I took a break and rediscovered the joys of painting.

Anyhoo, back in December I shot the Maroon 5 / Far East Movement concert in Trinidad. Got to run around the stage and I learnt alot about live event photography, something I've always dreaded. Turns out I love it, so I'll definitely do it again. Here are a few images from that concert. I have almost 1000 pics from it but I'm currently searching for the dvd with them. (so long ago that they've already been backed up)...will post more when I find it.

About two weeks ago I had a shoot with Pete Bethune. Pete is a badass , or a "terrorist" according to Japan. He was Trinidad collaborating with Trini Eco Warriors to bring attention to the endangered leather back turtle. For those not sure who he is but find the name familiar, his boat, the Ady Gil (formerly Earthrace), was pummeled by Japanese whaling vessel MV Shōnan Maru 2 (can be seen on Animal Planet's Whale Wars) and he was then arrested for boarding the ship. The shoot took place at Maqcueripe Bay and Bamboo Cathedral. I got soaked, sandy, and muddy from dodging waves and climbing rocks, but it was so much fun! I really should get a water-proof case for my camera....

Advanced Photoshop Magazine / new work

A few updates since I have slacked off on the posting here. I had a recent feature in Advanced Photoshop Magazine (see below) which was a lovely suprise jutting out of the mailbox when I got home one day. I have moved from Woodbrook into a nice quiet area away from noise, which is wonderful for concentrating on my work. I have set up a new studio space in Woodbrook and have been working non-stop. With my previous limited and awkward space, it was impossible to shoot as much as I wanted / needed to. Therefore, I have been on a shooting rampage, and do not intend to stop until Christmas.

Rosie is a pretty little lady with a pretty / pretty heavy sari that she wanted to capture during her photoshoot. So we ate some spinach, lifted up the sari, and crashed it on top her head. Ok it wasn't THAT heavy, but I'm sure the MUA (Gianna) had some aching muscles the next day. I just directed from behind the camera with my light-as-a-feather 50mm lens. I put two gelled lights onto the sari to pop the colours out a bit, using a blue and orangey/yellow tone, the same tones incorporated in the sari. Then out of no where, the sari exploded :O Good thing I was snapping away and captured it!

Jessica had no idea what she wanted to do for her manip piece. About 2 days before the shoot she texted me a cartoon version of Poison Ivy all up in Batman's face. So our themed changed from a very dark one, to a colourful comic book character, which I really preferred anyway. I love when clients practice in the mirror, and I love when they get so excited for a shoot that they go out and make a costume! The shoot was no more than 10 minutes, she knew exactly what she was doing way before she reached my house. God bless you Jessica, God bless ya.

I've been with my boyfriend for five years, and we've never done one of those "couple's portraits" where they're holding hands walking along the beach, or hugging up next to pretty flowers, orrrrrrrrrr wearing matching white shirts and blue jeans being caught in mid-laugh, or some other generic crap that doesn't come to mind right now. So a few weeks ago I thought about things that we both love, and it hit me - The Walking Dead! We are huge fans of that comic and are weeing ourselves waiting for the series to start soon. I scribbled a concept on one of my phone bill envelopes, and after a few weeks went by, I finally got the chance to do a quick shoot for this.

You know how they talk about undying love. This is Undead Love.

Yesterday I was a presenter at Above Group's 10th edition of Show & Tell. It was myself and Alan Davis, a surf board builder. Wish I got some pix of it but I forgot to tell someone to take a few shots during the presentation. Hopefully someone did , I'll add a pic or two if I come across any. I'm not a very outgoing super social gal (sans alcohol) , but it's so easy for me to go on and on about things that I love, and I love my job. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported Alan, myself, and Above Group.

I got a message from someone saying that they saw my work in Digital Camera World magazine this month, so that was a nice suprise. I completely forgot that something was going to be published there. I got my hands on a pdf of the mag, so here's a little screen shot of the feature.

Lost Friend, and other stories.....

I barely have any memories from my childhood. I'm not sure what all that is about, but last night I remembered something. I remembered being in primary school with my three friends, we were in the Botanical Gardens for P.E. , solving a crime. We were, after all, the Mysterious Four. We discovered an area with a shredded, polka-dotted, red and white dress after we drifted from the rest of the kids. We followed a trail that led us further away from our class. We came to a patch surrounded by bush and tall trees. We saw a foam mattress that was covering something. I picked up a long stick. I prodded the mattress. There was that torn dress everywhere. I jammed the stick under the mattress, turned it over quickly, and jumped back in horror as I saw....

I've always had a big imagination, and I'd pull my friends into my world. I used to tell the kids at school about our mysteries that we were solving, and about the "red eyes" I would "see" under the main school building, revel in freaking out everybody. I was a weirdo with a destiny.

I'm horrible at keeping in touch with people, but thanks to Facebook, I had eventually reconnected with everyone from my childhood. Except one. She was that important best friend that you have when you're still in the single digit age. One day, Sachi disappeared. I couldn't understand what had happened back then, but throughout the years I would ask my mother if she knew anything. Was she kidnapped? was she dead? We had no answers. She was there one minute, and gone the next. I blinked and I grew up. I still thought about her, but my memories were fading. I imagined her being married with kids, if she were still alive. I thought about how nice it would be if she had a boy the same age as my son, what was his name, what did he look like. Was her husband hott - grats to her if he was. What happened to her mom, her aunt....the other people in her life that were also in mine. What if she never disappeared...would we still be friends.....

I'm checking my Facebook, and there it is. A friend's request from Sachi. My chest hits my brain. She's very much alive and living in the US. We reconnect, I get the MSN-chatty-version of what happened to her, but I know I have to hear it in person. Fast-forward to my Florida trip that I mentioned in my last post. I shop til my card cries, and get my thrills on front row Sheikra. My vacation is coming to an end , but Sachi lives in this State and I'm not going to leave without seeing her.

I call her , and I hear this...American voice. She's so excited to see not just me, but my mom. We plan to meet at Dadeland Mall in the food court. I'm sitting there nervously looking around. I can't remember if I saw her first or if she saw me (the blonde poof isn't hard to spot). We have a long hug, and I step back and take her in. This is really Sachi, back from the dead....or back from the UFO that took her. Memories unlock , things start coming back to me. She remembers all these hidden moments. As she talks about them, I light up, because it's all coming back to me. We are so alike, but our lives are very different. She loves fashion and credits my mother for that. So many things, it helped open up that horrible memory of mine.....it was....refreshing. In the end, we got the real story. Her mother kidnapped her, grabbed her one random day and flew her out of the country with nothing but the clothes on her back. Her family in Trinidad didn't know where she was for many years. She was afraid that no one would remember her.

I was waiting to dig up some old pictures of us before I posted this, but that'll take another lifetime to do, so I took the liberty of MS-painting a few memories that I have of us as kids.

Who knows what the future holds for us, can't wait to see her again! Now for some work. When I did my shoot with Mckey Sullivan (ANTM), there was this mini-beauty onset named Jade. I took a few pictures of her between a wardrobe change but then completely forgot about them with all the new work I had to keep up with. A family member of hers passed away recently, and her uncle thought that one of the photos would cheer her up, since she's a big fan of fashion and ANTM. I sent them this one, and I was happy to hear that it put a smile on her face.

Good Morning Floridaaaaa!

I'm heading to Florida tomorrow morning for a little vacation time with my fellow Ferreiras. Haven't done the "entire immediate-family" travelling thing since I was in school, so thought I'd tag along this time and find a space somewhere in their car that I could fit in for the drive up to Orlando. I'm not supposed to be working for these 10 days but I'm walking with my "bess camera" just in case I have a free moment. I'll be home on the 26th and back out to work the very next day, so end of July is out, but I'm still taking bookings for August. I watched Planet Hulk a few months ago, and there was this scene where Caeira (one of the main characters) holds a child while around them goes boom. As she walks forward you think "oh great the kid survived yayyyyy!!!" but then the figure slips into ash and I go "NOOOOO!!!". So this piece was inspired by that. I'm familiar with the feeling of trying to protect a little one and having them (almost) slip away, so I think that is why this stayed in my head Below, you'll find a horrifyingly bad sketch for the piece, the model who posed for the main figure, and the final image.

Tuesday, mua Gianna Barcant and I headed to Couva for a client shoot...you know you're in Couva when things start getting really bushy, but in a good way. We shot in La Vega, an estate run by the client's family where you can buy plants, stomp on plants (by mistake) ,take pictures of plants ,and swim in the caiman infested beautiful lakes. It's really a gorgeous location and I'm a big fan of places where concrete is seldom seen. We stayed there til early evening before waving goodbye to those awesome people in that awesome house, and drove to back to the not-so-awesome concrete jungle.

Yesterday, we went back to the bush - but not Couva bush this time, Macurepe bush! Not too far in though. Went to that old house where everyone who owns a camera in Trinidad does shoots at (I'm part of the club now!) and did a quick shoot with Bajan bess-ting Leah Whitehead, and guitar-making-bess-ting Jonathan Krogh. The concept: Shoot a hott girl whilst showing off the guitar. It was a gypsy theme, and between playing dodgeball with the batty bats that live in the building, and not falling off the porch when backing up to get wider shots, we pulled it off under two hours. Joth's sister Gylla did the makeup, and gravity did the hair.

I have a lot of editing to do when I get back, as well as new sets that I have planned out. The rollercoasters will inspire me somehow, if not wipe out my memory. Please pray that American Airlines doesn't screw up my flight like they've done to so many people this week. Brb.

ANTM's Mckey Sullivan, and other interesting stuff

A much needed update! Since my return from LA (which was amazing and should have been longer than four days) I've been merrily up to my eyeballs with photoshoots and editing. Had a great experience working on a film, though it's absolutely super secret and if I told you I'd have to blablabla kill blablabla you.....actually I'D be killed so let's not go there. So we move on - I tore down my three-part giant photo-set of the "Flower Girls" from my kitchen wall to add to the Trinidad and Tobago Art Society's 2010 exhibition. If you know what my kitchen looks like then you'll understand why these prints are dearly missed.

Fashion Week Trinidad and Tobago, or FWTT (I keep thinking of the FFWD button, there's a joke there somewhere), just wrapped up, and even though I usually hide in a cave for that particular week, I took a step into the Hyatt to choose some clothes for my shoot with America's Next Top Model winner Mckey Sullivan (and got stared down by a half-shades half-glasses creature in the hotel, I didn't know the visually-impaired-pirate look was back). One Saturday I got a call saying that she was here and up to shooting, so for the next three days I was running around organising a location, wardrobe, hair, makeup, and a horse named Ferrari. It was a concept that I was planning on doing within the next two weeks and it suited her perfectly.

It all went down last Wednesday starting with Emily Quesnel and the ladies at Cahoots on hair and makeup while I ran around Woodbrook collecting wardrobe from Heather Jones and Meiling (whose clothes unfortunately didn't get used due to time constraints), then a Hilo run (always a necessity), followed by my poor car fighting her way up that St.Anns hill , and eventually, we made it to the location. We started with a Francis Hendy dress (which was supplied by the people at FFWD) , and after a round with a Heather Jones creation, we sat on the balcony of the cabin and waited for the horse to arrive. He was fashionably late and not very happy. This was the first time I worked with a horse (there's a joke there somewhere) so for the model and I to move around with him but still maintain a good composition and light source, was a bit tricky though I think we did alright in the end! Thanks to Nikki Chatoor, the horse-handler, for helping us out so much and supplying us with mountains of horse poop all over our lovely location. That was a dodgy situation. Mckey had to zip back to the Hyatt for a show so we wrapped up in the early evening, hung around a bit and stared at a bonfire whilst powering it with a sqwuaky rendition of Nigel Rojas' "we will rrIIIIIIIISSSSSSEEEEE" as it grew bigger and bigger.

Back to Meiling now. earlier this year I shot an image for her new collection "Noir" which was shown at Colombia's Fashion Week, and was just unveiled here in Trinidad.

About a year ago I did a shoot for a company named Kouture Ventures for their eyewear line, also just unveiled.

Talk at UWI

I'm a guest speaker at the Arts launch at UWI (University of the West Indies) next week Thursday 18th March. I'll be giving a brief talk about my work and experiences. So come and hear me squawk about the hott girls I shoot and attempt to inspire "d yout dem" into pursuing whatever it is they want to do / be in life. I'll have pretty pictures and hopefully a microphone and hearing aid since I'm pretty quiet (unless I'm drinking) and practically deaf.

What Dreams May Come / The Sister series

Yesterday, I did two things. First, I completed the 4th piece of my "The Sister" series. I shot this with Jade and Cherisse back in June 09, and every 2 months or so I would complete one of the concepts scribbled (very poorly) in my book (shown below). There are still a few that need to be completed, but this time next year HOPEFULLY it'll all be done!

The one I'm pointing to is the latest creation.

Original sketch showed that the glass she was holding contained a scene of her falling down the rabbit hole. After drawing a mockup within the image, I though that bunny tied to a balloon just looked so much better!

Second thing I did yesterday was finally work with makeup artist Carla Hutchinson. We've been emailing back and forth for a while now about setting up a shoot and it finally came to pass! I was so impressed with her airbrushed makeup , as well as the hair styling she did on Heidi! When we were ready to shoot, we headed down the street (literally down the street) to Gary Jordan's studio. He was kind enough to offer his space for me to shoot yesterday, and I was very happy about that since I was in a lazy mood anyway and really didn't feel like setting up the living room for the session :/ So thanks very much for that! I wanted to create a Renaissance-like oil painterly effect with this one, and I think I achieved it! I'll update as I edit more.

My friend and awesome hair dresser (or hair ARTIST EXTRAORDINAIRE) Kim Roy is up for the Head and Shoulder's Nations Favourite Hairdresser Award. Kim is an amazing hair stylist with the most lovely personality to boot! I've posted some photos below of work that we have done together. The year just started and I already have a nice little list of people who have stolen my work to promote their products or events. Listen Graphic Designer (we'll refer to the general Graphic Designer as Debbie from now on) Look Debbie, the internet may be big to you, but it is actually a very, very small place. Networking has made it extremely easy to come across art theft, so please be a good Debbie and make sure that you have permission to use an image, or pay for the usage if you don't. Because you will get caught. Not only will you get caught, but you will in turn embarrass your client (who in this case that I am about to write about, is just as bad as you are.)

The commercial work I did for singer Anya Li ended up on an invite for some party. There was no way I would have found out about this if someone on my Facebook didn't give me a head's up. So thank you Networking, you never let me down! *high five*

I messaged the person who posted this on Facebook, I always start out very polite. "Hey could you please take down this ad, one of my images is being used without my permission" course my laser vision is set to kill while I type this, because of past experiences I pretty much know how this will end.

Every comment I leave gets deleted, and my private message is ignored...that is, until I use the L word. The client thinks nothing wrong has been done "is it that serious?" yes client. Your Debbie has been stealing not only my image for your party THIS year, but for last year as well! That means my work has been stalked and stolen by COREY of www.COREYOGRAFIK.com (tel: 770.41.5553) for the past two years (he left his info on the flyer, what a good Debbie). Yeh, he's not answering his phone.

These pictures are not some photosnap off of Google with no trace of ownership. They are retouched, studio commercial photographs with a clear Copyright symbol with the name of the owner clearly stated. So spare me the "I didn't know where these came from" excuse.

I used to be a Debbie before I started photography. I was also a Nancy (Web Designer) and I was always aware of the whole copyright issue. That's why there were STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY CDs (which I borrowed once and don't think I ever returned...hmm...where is it?...) as well as our own imagery from going on the road and shooting content.

To crop out someone's copyright logo and then use it is for advertising is blatant theft, and I have let a good few incidents flutter by without seeking a lawyer - life gets in the way of dealing with these pests. Not anymore Debbie, I am coming for you. AND YOUR LITTLE DOG TOO! (oh wait, Dorothy is the Illustrator, nvm)

A really late, really long post

First for the year. Not that I haven't thought about updating, but the words weren't there, and I like to write a bit before I post more work. I'll be writing a lot more soon, have an upcoming website that will be a place to channel my experiences in something other than photography and design....but it may find a link from time to time.

I turned 25 today. Spent it stuffing my face , galavanting in the laura-mobile and writing "thank you :)" on my Facebook wall. I've never typed :) so much in one day. That's just me, yuh know, breaking meaningful records and whatnot /flex. I don't have a problem with getting older, I think once you fill your life with hard work and good things it's much easier to look back at the years past and nod with approval without thinking krist almeaty I'm getting old. That's just me. I'm rambling.

I have a tonne of backlogged work to post so please bare with the scrolling!

The next set is from a session done at Paprika restaurant in Cocorite, Trinidad. For all the Trinis ,and those visiting, it's on the left just a few buildings after Peakes gas station. Drive slowly and keep your eyes out for the sign! We got to use masks made from the same company that did the ones in Eyes Wide Shut. Made me wanna grab some paper and glue and try a ting. MACO People's latest issue has a feature on seven women in Trinidad representing their fields of work. I represented photography. Teneille Newallo (below) is an actress. Now this is far from the pretty pictures of pretty girls in pretty makeup, just complete lack of prettyrisation, and really just something that I had in my head for a year and never did. This was another great year, full of wonderful experiences (first one that came to mind was traveling around Europe for three weeks) and the forming of great new friendships all over the world. My son turned three and still won't stop sucking his three fingers (orthodontic future ahead), my hair went through a turquoise and now purple stage (soon to take a completely new look yet again), I developed new techniques with my work through lots of patience and practice..."I've grown as an artist blablabla", my sister to moved to Bahrain *sniff*, I had my first solo exhibition and also came out with my first calendar, my son had a near death experience that has changed me completely, and I reconnected with family in England, Madeira and Portugal, and I sincerely hope I get to see them again next year.

There's a lot more that I cannot remember right now, it'll come to me soon. I've been doing this job since 2007 and every year ends with a bang and starts off a bit slow. Already 2010 is looking to actually start off with a bang...it's exciting. I plan on travelling a lot more and connecting with even more wonderful people around the planet. To all my friends, I love you guys *squeeze til eyes pop*. To all my family around the world (especially Beckie in Bahrain and Joana in Madeira) I love you all so much. To all my fans (I always feel weird saying that word ...fans.....fanzzzz...phaaaansssss) thank you for supporting me, I appreciate it so much and if you have ever sent me an email and I have not replied, I apologise sincerely....keeping track of things isn't always easy.

I got an underwater camera for Christmas. It was either that or a professional recording mic to squawk into (thank my bf for choosing the camera). I went down the islands with my family on Boxing Day and had a salty time trying to get a proper self-portrait whilst getting tangled in my hair and my kid jumping on my back to "twim" around the bay. One of the shots that actually didn't capture my toe or elbow is posted below. It was a test run, and next time it'll be a pair of goggles, and an actual model :/

In other news, I'm playing Dragon Age Origins during my holiday break. You know you and your boyfriend are addicts when you call each other "my liege" and "look here wench" , and refer to the rude (and rather large) lady in the Burger King line as the "undead ogre - last boss who will go into berserker mode and wipe out the food court with her weave of doom and +20 poison acrylic claws of death" Anyway, if anyone else is playing this game, you my friend are awesome. And I'll throw in something about Avatar and District 9 since this is a year end wrap up. Two of the best movies of the year. We should try not to judge people in life, but if you were not moved by either of these movies then you're probably a noob who thought Batman and Robin was timeless (Mr Freeze: "I'm giving you...the cold shoulder...NOW GET TO DA CHOPPA"). That ladies and gentlemen, was my geek paragraph, moving on now.

My new year resolutions: exercise. There's a dusty treadmill next to me...like literally a meter and a half from my left elbow right now, that I bought for Carnival in 2008 (not even kidding) and went on once (ONCE) in 2009. There's also that ab ripper 1000.px.extremedotsomething that I was all YEH I WILL DO THIS EVERY DAY and never did it again. So sticking with an exercise plan is my goal. I've also been working on myself for a while now and trying to stay away from any negative energy, and it feels wonderful. I'm going to keep doing that, only good can come out of this one. My third resolution is to keep my bedroom clean. With my son finally getting his own room, I think it'll be a lot easier. I've just thought of a fourth one - when an idea comes to mind, just DO IT. I tend to linger a bit and take forever to plan, but I need to get on it asap so that the drive doesn't fade. I'm hoping I can fulfill at least two of these things.

I'm going to end this epic essay with a HAPPY NEW YEAR! and the usual joke that's said every 31st of December, "I won't see you again til, like, NEXT YEAR man" :O

I did a self-portrait inspired by the trailer about a week and half ago. I said it would be my favourite movie, and let me tell you...IT IS. James Cameron was put here to make this movie. I feel so inspired by the world of Pandora and the Na'vi's connection with nature. I'm no tree-hugger, but human beings really piss me off the way they....we....treat this planet. Not only that, but the way we crown ourselves the dominant ones above anything that can ever exist, as a species and in our own individual minds. The last time I felt moved by a film was when I saw District 9 (love it or not, that's what people are capable of). It gave me that familiar feeling of anger towards our species, how much hate and greed runs through our veins, how the world is treated as a cold dead thing and we forget about how much life flows through it. Before I pull out the Cumbaya record and talk about "feeeeelings" I'll end it with the image I created before I saw the movie. I think there'll be a lot more. No movie makes me cry and gets away with it . /flex

To everyone who came to the exhibition, a big THANK YOU! It was a complete success and a sigh of relief that it went pretty much smoothly. Also a thank you to those who bought my 2010 calendar :) There are a few left so if you are interested please contact me at info@lauraferreira.com . (also a great Christmas present *wink* etc etc.) It was an exciting month so I made sure to log on tonight and do an update before December takes over tomorrow!

I've been quite busy recently with various commercial works, and I'm looking forward to wrapping them up for the holidays and doing some fun personal projects. I have an obsession with Christmas lights so I think I'll be going to the local hardware store very soon , gesturing my hand in a sweeping motion over the lights department with a "Ill take this". Another project I started is one involving my son. Since I lost so many of hus baby pictures when my HD went to Heaven, I decided to start stalking him with my camera and capturing some candid and non-candid moments with him. I got a lot of new content this weekend, it's really teaching me how to be a pro-paparazzo! It is a bit personal but it's the only thing of that sort that I'll ever have on a public server.

Now for some new content. Here are some commissions I've done recently including work for jeweler Barbara Jardine, some portrait shots of work I've done with makeup artist Cherisse Amoroso, as well as a long-overdue continuation of my Trinidad Folklore series. This time it was "da ladies favourite" Kiwan posing as the main character. We had planned to shoot this over a year ago and because I take forever to plan projects, and he sleeps until 2pm, we never got around to it. Instead I took a photo from a previous shoot with him and used it for my project. I did a WIP (Work In Progress) Tutorial to show how I go from basic photo to final concept in this particular photo-manipulation. I've been meaning to do one of these for a while but this was the first time I actually remembered to screenshot and paste as I worked! I hope it inspires you and gives you some insight into the time and patience that goes into creating these pieces.

I've been living in the past for about a week. Realised today that the date on my watch is actually yesterday's, so an entire 24 hours has gone *poof*. The calendar artwork is at the printer's now and I'm patiently waiting to get the hard copies. I do feel a bit nervous because I've never printed my work like this before, I'm just a print noob going through her first nooby experience. You go through the work over and over proof-reading it and you swear that everything is fine. Then they call and inform you that Christmas was spelled wrong :/

I also finally got the chance to see The Solitary Alchemist (the film I did the poster for) and left the cinema completely inspired. As a result, I'm about to begin a series inspired by the work of jeweler Barbara Jardine, who the film was based on. I wrote a bit more about it here , feel free to check it out. There are other sets I would like to do before October is finished but I'm just piling on too much right now, the plate is going to break. So don't be surprised if you see a Halloween series in November / December.

I did some work in September with my favourite model Chris Steel. We got to pick out some Heather Jones dresses from her store and trekked up to this beauitul peak in St. Anns where Pine trees surround a little log cabin. Didn't feel like Trinidad at all! Apparently it was more like Canada, but I've never been so I could only nod and blink at Chris. Here are the images from that set plus some self-portraits I did, and work with HD Family - soca artistes from Trinidad.

The hairstylist (Kim Roy) who I worked with in England came down for a week and the two of us plus MUA Emily Quesnel and employees from salon CAHOOTS, got together and didnotsleepfor3days. I'm so horrible with the updating here, I once told myself that I'd do it once a week but pffffft that didn't happen. I guess it's a good thing that I'm too busy to do so, means more content when I do get around to it :) I've started my Metamorphosis series so you can see what pieces I've done so far below. I'm also contributing some work to the Caribbean's first Erotic Art Week, but I barely have time to produce new content so it may just be some of the older work that I had done earlier this year. I'm being featured in two magazines this month (one from Brazil another from UK) but the names slip my mind right now, I'll post shots when I get copies.

I've been doing a lot more work with musicians and bands, and I've really got to say that I love working with these awesome people! So many things to do and such open minds to do it with.

On a personal note, I've been reunited with a friend from my childhood who disappeared when we were about 8. I didn't know what happened to her or if she was even alive, but God bless the internet, she's alive and well in the US.
June is being good to me, the best month of the year so far, so maybe I'll be able to update with some excellent news soon ;) Watch and see what happens...and you can also follow this blog by clicking on the thing way down at the bottom. 'idea Photos' magazine

My work is featured on the front and back cover of the May/June issue of idea Photos (Taiwan). There's also an interview and spread inside though I haven't seen it yet so I'll post some photos when I get my copy. I also won Photo of the Week in Digital Photographer magazine so I'll have a feature in the next issue. I've got a few upcoming campaigns that I'll talk about soon enough. Completely unrelated to pictures, I'm doing a hair show on Sunday (I volunteered to be a guinea pig) so I'll be sporting some mega bright hair soon :D I'm so excited! May also be heading to the US very soon, but we shall see! For now, take a look at some recent work :)

London Photoshoot / in Madeira

A quick update about Europe so far. Had my photoshoot with singer Ami Richardson on Sunday. Much thanks to my awesome team (Ami Richardson, Kim Roy, Emily Quesnel, and Samantha Cole London) We started at Hamstead Heath and made our way into Camden. Got quite a bit of attention with Ami's giant red beehive sort of hair. My left leg was in an absolute mess from the previous night of hopping around London, and in typical Laura fashion, I got home at 5am....and woke up at 8am for the shoot :/ So Sunday morning I had one working leg, no voice, and felt like death. I am so proud of myself for making it!

We met at Emily's salon, "Holistic Hair and Beauty" in West Hamstead , where the makeup and hair was done. Then we headed off to Hamstead Heath and did a few pictures there. Of course we got many a stare from the folks walking their dogs, and kids pointing fingers "mummy what's wrong with her head?". At some point we saw a green jeep approaching and it was the park patrol!! We weren't supposed to be shooting there apparently (he assumed it was commercial?) so we said we were wrapping up, then quickly got back into it when they drove off. My leg by now was too messed up to walk on, so Kim found me a nice stick (named Sticky) to support myself on. When I was ready to shoot I would say "please hold Sticky". He currently resides at Emily's salon in a vase.

When I thought I was done with Heath, Ami and I spotted these two giant sheep looking beings from a mile away. We ran up to them and I asked their mum if they could pose with us. So one of the photos you'll see below is Ami with Fred and Darcy. Gorgeous creatures and so lovable! Many thanks to their mummy for letting us have a bit of fun with them :)

Soon after, we were making our way to Camden. At some point we were waiting at a bus stop and I was thinking to myself "Ami really reminds me of Helena Bonham-Carter with that hair and clothes" , low and behold Helena Bonham-Carter is standing next to us with her kids in a wheelbarrow. Now I never cared for celebrities, and I think that staring is rude....but I stared, mouth hanging open and everything. I thought it was pretty ironic that she had been on my mind and was suddenly standing next to me. So that was my super cool story that I'm going to KILL when I get back home :D

In Camden we went hunting for punks, but they don't like the sun apparently and we only saw them as we were leaving....got some girls to pose for me though. Most photos were taken around Camden Lock and again, much attention. Shot there for a bit then made our way back to Hamstead. I'm really fast-forwarding right now but that's only because I'm in Madeira at the moment and I am being rushed to get ready and hit the road. All in all the shoot went great and I met some absolutely cool souls. I'm going to update this again soon, I've got some wicked fast internet that I'm mooching from the hotel next door.

2 days til Europe / Art competition / The Cave

One of my April resolutions is to update this site more often, which includes shooting more sets to have more pretty pictures with every new post. I've been busy creating novel covers and dipping my camera into cave water, so now I've finally had the time to sit down and write something.

Ok, first thing's first. My flight to England is on Tuesday and I haven't started packing my one red suitcase yet. I don't really own warm clothes so I'm hoping that "layering" will work. The following Monday I'm leaving the UK and heading to Madeira for a little more than a week. This is the part that has me most excited. Last time I was there was over 10 years ago, and I remember so much (remembering things is what Laura does not do best). Before I get poetic about the cobblestone roads and cute triangle houses surrounded by flowers up in the hills of Santana....ok....I'll move on to my next destination which is Lisbon. Will be there for about 4 days then back to England for a few more before returning home. All in all I'll be gone for 3 weeks, and I'm trying my best not to think about being so far from my son for almost a month. He's 2 and I always have this fear that he'll forget who I am if I'm gone for more than a week :/ Stupid I know, but thank God for web cams.

In other news, I entered an art competition earlier this year and recently discovered that my painting won. So from what the details said, I get $2500 and my painting blown up and pasted onto the wall around The Oval (stadium in Trinidad). That was pretty cool considering the fact that I rushed it the day before the deadline and actually completed it at the very last moment. I also was in some sort of top 10...or....12? hmm...top list of "young people to watch in the Caribbean" on tv. That was also pretty awesome. I feel like there was something else I was supposed to write about, but I guess it'll come to me in due time!

I've been working on two fantasy novel covers for author Alaya Johnson and her Spirit Binders trilogy, that was probably the smoothest job I've ever done. I also did a shoot earlier this week in Gasparee Caves. Basically Gasparee is an island right off of Trinidad, like 10 minutes away, and they have this beautiful cave that I haven't been to since I took my class there when I was 14 (I remember some of the girls called me McGuyver cause I was helping my father tie up the boat, and apparently that's something only ppl do on tv?). So quite randomly, the idea to do a fashion set there popped into my head. When I get great ideas I get a complete rush of adrenalin and start dialing numbers and organising. Within 2 days we were hiking up to the cave.

I brought a single strobe with me but my power pack was a bit of fail, so most of the shots coming up were with natural light only. One or two were natural light mixed with the coloured ambient lights that eventually turned on when tour guides discovered us :D I ended up stripping down a bit and wading in the crystal clear but extremely salty water. I was up to my neck for the first shot that you'll see here, and accidentally lowered the camera into the water. Not much, just like a few millimetres. I gasped, stood up, and sort of shook it around like a real professional would do. Anyway, it's not dead, just covered in cave scum. I think it's one of my favourite sets ever. I have some more interesting concepts in mind, but they'll have to wait til I come back. So now, here are some of the shots from my new set "The Cave"

Yes this update should have come sooner. So I'm still awaiting confirmation on the UK dates, every time I go out I get "hey aren't you supposed to be....not....here...?" Well I'm waiting on a family member to organise some important stuff before we travel, and it's taking longer than expected. This does, however, give me more time to stuff my face and put on some weight to battle the snow and ice yetis that I think are pretty common up there. Am I right? I don't know, it's been a while.

I'm 24 years old now! Just one year away from being a quarter century and decrepit. I guess I won't be getting anymore emails like "omg but you're sooo youngg!" ha. I'm just kidding maybe.

Well not too much to update here besides some new content. My UK trip was postponed for 2 weeks so looks like I'll be in England for my birthday! (February 11th, I accept cash and cc :D ). Well let's see...right now there is a children's party going on at my house. A four year old's to be precise. I now remember why I don't play kiddy cds in the car when I drop my son to school, the sound is crawling my blood. Instead he got a ipod full of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Metallica at his little party last year :)

In terms of work, I've had a slow but steady start to the year. It's the Christmas syndrome -nobody feels like booking anything when their pockets are empty. It's a pace that works out better for me though, I'm not swamped (yet) like I was at the end of last year, pulling hair out and eyes twitching...all the stress symptoms, really attractive...

I can't wait to meet up with some friends in England though, and meet some new ones. After this trip I'm heading to Canada in March/April so I'm a little ball of excitement. I also started painting again (I'll post the final piece and all the WIP shots soon). I forgot how much fun it is, and how incredibly fast I get through it. I photograph fast, I draw fast, I paint fast....I hate dragging things along.

Happy new year! Hope everyone didn't get lazy over the Christmas period like I did (even if it was just a week). I finally got a laptop, the one extremely necessary thing I needed for work, and I lerv it :)

I'll be heading to England in two weeks and I am currently taking bookings for sessions up there. I'm trying my best not to turn it into one big week of photo-snapping, so just two days out of the week are going towards work. Anyone who's interested in booking can email me for more info, or if you'd like to just meet up, I'm down with that.

My work is featured in the latest issue of Digital SLR magazine as well as on the cover of the November / December issue of Caribbean Beat magazine, anyone travelling on Caribbean Airways can take a look - that photo was done for EmmaLouchie Jewellery earlier in the year and I had no idea it made cover (I was not credited as photographer). I'll post the Digital SLR feature when I get a copy.

Here is some work I've done for musician Etienne Charles - the newspapers are calling him a saxophonist when obviously it's a triangle he plays! Also, up and coming singer Annya Li from the recent NY shoot.

I am starting a new personal project today entitled "Subhuman". Part woman part machine, more like mock posters for a movie in my head. A little fun to break the work cycle. If you've ever heard of Pendulum, their music is fueling this one.

Photo Digital magazine feature / Back from New York

My work is featured in the lastest issue of Photo Digital magazine. Got cover photo too, so that was a nice thing to come back home to. Many thanks to Ilker :)

So yes, I'm back home, and I'm happy to say that I didn't freeze to death :) I'm used to sprawling around the house in short pants and vest, so wearing a coat, scarf and gloves took a few moments to get used to. Needless to say, the cold got right through my layers, and hiding behind trees didn't stop the killer breeze from stinging me full-body! Other than the weather making my hands shake so much that taking pictures took a lot more concentration than normal, it was a fine time. I got a new lens, a camcorder (which captured a few behind the scenes episodes), and my "curry" iPod which looked bright yellow and pretty in the store lighting.

Thanks to Lee (and his mom) for taking me around NY and putting up with my tourist self and squirmishness everytime a slight breeze blew and I had to jump on the spot for a few seconds , which was my warming ritual. The shoot was done in a Brooklyn studio, and for a lesser part, outside in the freeze. That's where my camera wouldn't stop shaking and I had to grind my teeth in deep concentration. It all worked out fine in the end! Having gone through a lovely food poisoning experience before the trip, I lost a good few pounds so I wasn't very....thermal.

Our pilot on the way to NY was Captain Kirk, I though that was pretty funny, but only Lee and I laughed (I guffawed, I think), and we almost missed our plane twice due to our intense conversations about old people wearing surgical masks (and picking at each other's scalps? very nice, they were on our flight :/) and donuts. Besides being blind, I'm also deaf - so if he didn't hear our last names being called we'd still be in Puerto Rico.

I slept though about 80% of my son's birthday which was a few hours after I got back into Trinidad, and I had to jump right into more work and photoshoots whilst in zombie mode. This weekend I'm dropping everything to bake for his costume party on Sunday, then it's back to work. Happy belated Halloween!

Hey folks. I'm flying back to NYC on Friday to shoot an up and coming music artiste, and I'm also looking forward to picking up a bit of gear while I'm there :D On Saturday I'm going to meet up with designer Karen Von Oppen and spend a few dollars on some wicked neck pieces that I've been dreaming about for the past month. Will also be bringing back some clothes from Vicious Dolls for a special shoot I'm having in November. Oh yes. Good times are a-coming.

When I get back it's straight into party planning for my soon-to-be-2 year old son's birthday :) Once October is out of the way I will be taking bookings again. Right now, I have too much on my plate with wondering what to bake for his tiny guests, and where I'm going to find warm clothes that will stop me from becoming an ice-cube (I'm not very good in even slightly cold weather).

So this image is from yesterday's session. I can't stress on how much I admire Christianne's modelling. She's the best in Trinidad and Tobago and I am always so happy to work with her. More to come!

It's 2:14am and I've got to wake up in T-minus 4 hours to drop my son to school. I did a horrible thing today. I was reading the second book in the quite awesome Belgariad series, then I simply fell asleep - and when I fall asleep early I get too much energy at night and, well, here I am. Up and wide-eyed in the dark morning. So I decided to post an update just because I've run out of things to do online at this point.

I press enter to start a new paragraph, and realise I really have nothing to say. Lovely weather we're having :/

Anyway, to make this post worthwhile, here are some images I've recently done with designer Anita Bhatt and her Vicious Dolls line, and some clients work. I shot some girls in a scene where the had to point and guffaw at a male stripper yesterday, it was fun times, though I think in all our hysterical laughter we made the half-naked gentlemen a bit embarrassed . Poor guy will never model again I presume, haha. I'm going to have one last go at my book, maybe until the next chapter, then crawl into bed before the little one wakes up and jumps on my stomach, as is the norm at 6am.

New Work - projects, photobook, Vicious Dolls, la de da

I'm so hungry I can barely type, and watching Emril Live on Food Network was a bad idea. So I'm back to work now, got a few projects coming up including my first photobook, collaborations with clothing line Vicious Dolls, and projects I can't yet talk about due to I-would-have-to-kill-you-ness. My son started a play group three days a week now, so I've had the duty of dropping him in the morning and picking him up in the afternoon, which I really enjoy. I love driving.

I'm also investing in some gorgeous corset bras, neck corsets, and chokers for my shoots. Ok so I'll be ordering them all in my size, SO WHAT! It's an early Xmas present to myself, and I think I can squeeze Christianne or Gabrielle into them. Speaking of Gabrielle, that's Gabrielle Walcott - Trinidad and Tobago's contestant for the Miss World pageant being held in South Africa this year. I had a fun little shoot with her this week and Gianna once again did the fantastic makeup. Here are a few images from that set. I've seen Gabby model before and I honestly thought she only did one or two styles, but she completely blew me away. You'll be seeing a lot more of her on this site, I've found another favourite model.

My friend Ceola is down here from England for a few weeks so we got together on Saturday and did a little shoot. First we raided an arts and crafts store down the road and bought the cheapest pile of "Asiany looking" junk, which included some sort of headpiece that looked like Mickey Mouse ears, an umbrella that someone carelessly painted all over to look "oriental", and these pop up red lanterns (two in one pack, score!) I then harassed a few friends for props, ranging from a small katana (which I had Ceola buttering bread with) to a meshed cloth-thing that means 'good luck' in Chinese (I remember Al saying it meant 'hope' but then again I "hear things"). We then went back to my place, flipped a table on its side, masking-taped a broom to a window - which a puzzled brother-in-law found later that night - and made a mini set, it was EPIC.

After that, I squashed a black mask on her face (but not before we trial and errored through the makeup bit) and wrapped her up in white tulle. Took some shots and then sprawled out on the couch for a breather while she attempted to scrape the makeup (which was about 10 -12 layers) off her face....apparently her eyebrows were still pink the next day. Yes so that was fun times, and the first shoot I've had in a few weeks. My vacation is leaving me bored and desperate. I have now resorted to playing WoW every night which has caused a very positive reaction as my gear is now quite leet (it was crap before).

rightt....nothing of interest to talk about anymore. I'm trying to teach my son how to say "banana" because I think it's an interesting word - he's got the "bah" and the "nana" down, but can't quite seem to join the two together. I've also been killing this emoticon because I do that facial expression a lot. What an unnecessary paragraph this was. Feels like a storm is coming, off to bed night-night.

This is the last week that I am working until September. I have four shoots during the week, and this weekend will be spent getting most of the editing out of the way (at least, that' what I'm aiming for) then I am kicking off my shoes and .... just sitting there I guess. Ah, but I will be doing some of my own shoots (which I miss terribly) and some more fantasy artwork. I'm actually pretty excited to have say as to exactly what I want to shoot for the next 3 weeks, so I won't be falling asleep behind the camera. I have this saying that I came up with after working with an ad agency; "The next time someone says 'I want something edgy' I'm going to point them to the nearest cliff". Fact is, no one wants something "edgy" because no one wants to take chances. I would therefore really like to obliterate the word. I wonder what would happen if I started an ad agency....now THAT would be interesting.

Tobago shoot and melting

Sometimes I wish I lived in a cold country. Like right now. You literally jump into the cold shower, jump back out, and you're sweating right away. It's that hot. Even the ac struggles to get the room to a temperature fit for a melting human. So it is only fitting to post some images from a recent shoot in Tobago that I did with a lovely army of models, stylists and makeup artist extraordinaire, Gianna. It was shot at Le Grand Courlan Resort and Spa, as well as various nearby locations. If there is one thing I learnt from the entire experience, it is 'Buy a big straw hat next time you work a full 2 days in the sun.' Have you seen me? I'm as white as the background I'm typing this blog on (it's black on the site though, but it's the only simile I could come up with right now). Thanks to Peter Elias, Heather Jones, Queen Esther and KAJ for the wonderful dresses. Thanks to random guy with straw hat (he knew what he was doing) for letting us use the horse.

Carnival shots and my wonton disturbance

The launch of a Carnival band held on Saturday, which means I can splop those pictures on my page now. These shots were taken at the Chaguaramas golf course during the week - so apologies to the millionaires' whose intense game of golf we interrupted.

Now about my wontons....wonton soup to be precise. So I go to MovieTowne (Trinidad's fancy shmancy cinema complex) with my son and boyfriend to get some ice cream on Saturday. I notice there's a lone boom mic guy looking a bit lost. Obviously he must have a reason for holding his muppet-like microphone over his shoulder, and I finally see the rest of the crew trodding our way. Looked like a reality show was being filmed as a bunch of loud mouthed Americans walked past us shouting something or the other (they were obviously being louder than usual for the cameras). We dodge them and continue eating our ice-cream at the side of the pavement.

We then decide "hey we need food" after we had our ice-cream (we're wonderful parents) and head on over to Westmall's food court. I see the same microphone guy and shriek "Oh God they're here too". The crew choose to sit right next to us, and what looked like a 4 foot chihuahua with a bad blonde weave starts fighting with another weave-clad woman very loudly. "You shut up - no YOU shut up - NOOOOOoooOOOOOooo YOUUUU shut up" *finger snap* and it goes on for a while. She was also snapping at these little girls and saying "I bite" I bet you do.

A crowd gathers, because that's what Trinis do best, and I am now trying to eat my wonton soup whilst a bunch of bottoms are in my face trying to get a glimpse of the ensuing battle. I notice a friend of mine is standing nearby looking like he's a part of all of this. I enquire about wtf is going on. He says that it's a reality show on Keyshia Cole's family. Anyway, I thought it was an interesting story to share, especially if you know who Keyshia Cole is (I didn't cause I don't listen to radio).

So if anyone sees that show and notices a girl with a red long sleeved top eating ice cream/ soup with a "move from me" look on her face......

July and the vacation I intend on taking

Notice the word intend , and I use "vacation" very loosely. I've been busy doing shots for two Carnival bands , but I've reached the point where I'm seeing feathers and beads in my sleep, so I'm a bit anxious to wrap those jobs up. The ads that I did for Chanson ice cream are finally out , noticed one in the papers yesterday as I was looking for the movie guide (Batman opens tomorrow). Speaking of Batman, here's a cartoon I did 5 years ago.

So this "vacation" I'm intending on taking is more of a break from photography for 3 weeks, not like I'm flying out to Europe and back packing (I've always wanted to do this....then I saw Hostel). I just haven't had a break since last May and I would like to spend more time with my son. Mind you, I'm pretty sure I'll be calling up Chris Steel to do some conceptual pieces in between. When I'm not working I feel a tad bit....lost? I openly admit that I'm addicted to my job, even though at times I feel like pelting the camera in the nearest pothole (which isn't hard to find). I keep telling myself that this is the year for hard work, and next year I'm going to take a 3 week real vacation and visit family in Portugal and just hobble around Europe enjoying the atmosphere, and of course, doing a few shoots while I'm there.

Anything else I had to put here? Can't remember right now, but here are a few shots that I recently did.

Ahhh wait, I don't think I ever posted my Model Behaviour set. These shots just depict the sterotyped attitude of any top model (a la Naomi Campbell). Just a concept I came up with whilst finishing up a shoot some time in February. The price for these shots? We broke my son's crib.

Scorch magazine and commissioned shoots

Allo allo! I've been working nonstop since I got back from NY. Had a shoot the day after I got in (luckily I caught enough sleep in between) and got to try out my new camera. Oh is it sweet! Also had a shoot with singer Michelle Xavier from Imij and Co., got her to put on a few of the many wigs I purchased recently. Had a but of a scare though. Thought my flash trigger stopped working and started freaking out silently during the shoot. Well, after reading the instructions over and over again I realised that the battery was dead (doi!). That basically sums up the 10 minutes of horror I went through.

The June issue of Scorch is out! It includes shots I took of cast members from the new show The Reef. This new series is directed by Danielle Dieffenthaller who had a previous show called Westwood Park. *a bird just flew into my window, this happens way too often* If you're in Trinidad, try grabbing a copy of the magazine...they're everywhere.

I Love New York

I'm back from my New York trip, and the first thing I have to say is that it was an experience I'll never forget. Christiane and I stayed with our friend Miracle in New Jersey (thank you very much for having us and showing us around) but everyday we were roaming about Manhattan looking for locations, and basically being tourists when we had free time.

The shoot was done for the Earth Member 4 Life clothing line (website coming soon). We had two MAC MUAs and about 4 models in total. Forgive me guys, I can't remember names right now due to having zero sleep since I've been back. Anyway, we shot mostly around the Greenwich Village area and a dance studio in...ok I forgot wh ere the studio was :S The great thing about this shoot was that even though I was working, I was having the time of my life taking in all my surroundings. Eavesdropping on pedestrians as they walked past "Dude it totally sucks not having furniture..." and trying out Vegan food even though our party of ten included zero vegetarians.

The day after that shoot, Chris and I waddled around Manhattan dodging speedy New Yorkers and trying not to get lost. I swear, e very time I blinked I thought "WHERE AM I??!!" The highlight of this day was that I went into B&H and got my spanking new Canon 5D (see picture below)

So after unwrapping the camera from the packaging, peeing myself in disbelief that I finally had it, and then realising that I was now broke, we headed back out into the city where I bounced up these guys.

Well I had to pose with them, show off my gear too!

After trading camera information, we were off again. Saw a very interesting looking drag queen and attempted to chase him down for a picture while some random guy shouted "YOU GET THAT PICTURE GIRL!!!!" But right when I was 2 metres away I gave up, he was walking mighty fast on those stilettos! I also thought I saw a few celebrities but I feel bad taking obvious pictures of them. I fail as a paparazzo.

So after losing each other for about 20 minutes, we headed back into Greenwich to meet up with our friend Helen, and went home. Later that night we did a min i shoot in a club called Aura, as well as in Union Square Park. By this time it was around 2 am in the morning and we had to be in the airport for 8 am. Well excuse me , I didn't see all the sites I wanted to! So now it's 3am and we're stopping off at Times Square, Central Park and Rockefella Centre. There's me in the middle of the street, eyes saucer-like taking it all in. Most of the time I was thinking "ok which scene in Cloverfield was shot here again?..." Got home after 4am I believe and felt an overwhleming sense of sadness when I realised that this was the day we were leaving. All in all, it was such a wonderful experience, and I met some really great people which is always a bonus. Now I'm planning my own little vacation in NYC :D

Oh by the way, this is the best method of beating a total 16 hours of sitting in a plane (connecting flights)

Magazine shoot in Tobago and site updates

I finally got around to fixing the news / home page so now it'll be easier for me to update. All the older posts have been archived with the true date of the original posting in their respective titles.

So I'm heading to Tobago tomorrow with Gianna Barcant (my MUA) for 3 days to shoot for a magazine. After that it's straight to Margarita for a friend's wedding. I've never been there so I'm doing my little research right now. All I know is there's a lot of sand and boob jobs are cheap.

I'll also be heading to New York in early June, but I will have more info on that closer to then. Again, I've never been there and the last time I saw anything remotely connected to NY was footage of an alien eating a camera guy . So maybe I shouldn't walk with my camera....

I HAVE A SITE??? Ok I haven't updated in almost a month because I haven't had a chance to sit down and do so. However, when I do "have a chance" I opt for my bed. So here's a little bit about what has gone down these past few weeks. I've had a lot of private commissioned work, I did a charity event for Brian Lara's Pearl and Bunty foundation at Zen, and I've been hired to do some pretty big upcoming campaigns. Oh yeah, I also did a live interview on TV which I didn't realise was live until 5 minutes before it started. I got to say 'crackhead' on national television. I'm also working on a few personal projects of mine, first one being a Trinidad Folklore set. I'm doing my interpretation of a few characters from the local folklore, and I'm having a fun time with it. Been meaning to do this since August of last year, but that's just me being a procrastinator. These are only a handful of the many shots I have recently done. Some images from my shoot yesterday with Danielle. Done in studio then way up the winding road and into Fort George, an historical site with a number of green canons. In Trinidad we have this thing in the sky that slowly moves around and takes our money. You'll see that one in the first picture. Please click on the image to see a bigger preview. There are some small details worth watching.

I'm slowly evolving into a surrealist, and I'm pretty happy for the change.

I'm trying to remember what happened after my last update... I have a bad memory so I rely on my little notebook to remind me of jobs, events, people's names, yadda yadda. Ok yes, I had a few client shoots including one for the third issue of Scorch magazine, as well as a "breather" shoot that I did with my good friend/favourite MUA Gianna Barcant, and old friend/favourite Trini model Christianne Steel. I also attended the Miss Tnt Universe/World gig at Zen thanks to Peter Elias. It was very entertaining and I met some very cool souls down there, including (now remember I said I have a bad memory) Anthony, a photographer based in England (you're probably reading this so I hope I got that right!)

Scorch shoot was done partly in a fishing village in Carenage and partly on a yacht in Chaguaramas. Fishing village was the more interesting one as we had to ask this guy (we'll call him Curtis, he looked like a Curtis) to borrow his pirogue. Well, the entire village ended up watching this poor model in her skimpy bikini try to get comfortable on the bow of this pirogue which was dry-docked and covered in bird shit (I can say shit on my site) Well I thought it was pretty funny, made me remember just how much I'm glad not to be a model.

Shot Gianna (makeup artist) in a red mask I bought on Ariapita Ave. Next day Christianne joined us and we spent the entire day making her look more like Audrey Hepburn, photographing her, and testing out my new set of lights. I prefer natural lighting still because I know what I'm doing when it comes to that. I honestly need to get used to these artificial lights, I feel like a noob.

I just looked up at the monitor and realised how much I typed. I feel like a Blogger. Here comes more length to this update, the shots that I just spoke about (excluding Scorch).

I'm the cover story in today's Trinidad Express Woman's magazine. Here are some shots from my session with Kerri, Alexis, Rocks Frocks and Cocktails, as well as a self-portrait I did for my 23rd birthday. It's all downhill from here! As a birthday present to myself, I ordered a set of lights...so look out for the first test shoot that I do with them. I've got a lot of ideas running around in my head, and I think that the first set I do will be conceptual self portraits (just to get a feel for artificial lighting when I'm so used to natural).

More from my session with Toni as well as new shots from yesterday's shoot with 'Rocks, Frocks and Cocktails'. First time I did a shoot whilst feeling like death. Played Carnival earlier this week and I'm paying for it with a cold and what feels like a broken hip. I still have my red band from my section on my wrist, I've been too lazy to cut it off.

Have many shoots lined up for next week so I'm stocking up on the meds, plus it's birthday time on Monday so let's hope I feel better so I can blow the 23 candles out. More updates to come soon, as well as a revamp of this front page. Been meaning to make a php blog but been too busy. Since the page is about a mile long now I've got to get around to it. *cough*

Last Sunday I was the cover feature of The Trinidad Guardian's Woman Wise magazine. Story is here. Please laugh at then ignore the half asleep drugged up picture of me, I didn't know I was going to be photographed (and splashed across the cover :S ) I've been listening to a lot of music by an artiste named Origa and I'm feeling a bit inspired to do some anime type shots. Her song 'Rise' inspired this one. I want to take a short break from commissions and go back to my artistic roots and tra la la. After all, it's what got me here in the first place.

First off, happy new year!!!1!!!

Now onto business...I haven't updated for over a week now and that's basically because I've been drowning in work (that's a reason not a complaint). First shoot of the year was with Alexis, second was with Kasey and Nikhloai from Precision Productions third was with Soca artistes Patrice Roberts, Farmer Nappy, Benjai and Zan. So that's was how my week went, and here are some of the shots.

A special round of applause goes out to Benjai for posing with our pitbull Simba and barely flinching. Another round of applause for Patrice Roberts who somehow has enough energy to do a shoot then perform at a fete. I was probably in my bed when she was on stage.

A few shots from some sessions last week. Did my first artistic nude and I'm happy with how it turned out. Found a butterfly in the model's room so used him as a prop (he was quite dead). For Krystal's shoot we headed back up Lady Chancellor Rd to the spot where I did my first shoot ever with Jade Lee Loy a few months back. Also some more from Vasha's shoot.

Other than that today is Christmas Eve and I've spent almost all my money on presents for my boyfriend and son...just can't help myself, when I see something that I know someone will really love I HAVE to get it , no matter the cost (well once it's not overly expensive). This bites me in the arse once Xmas is over, but say what, I'll make up for it in due time. A bird just flew into my window...... I'm smelling ham, ahh yes. Can't wait to have my Xmas breakfast/lunch/dinner tomorrow. Woot! Merry Xmas everyone.

Did some shots (actually, many shots) for Scorch's second issue. We ended up in the Savannah with our feet on top the ruins of the old Grand Stand (the guard let us in). Then made our way to Brian Lara Promenade and got who I think to be the best model ever, Leroy the vagrant (he looked like a Leroy), to pose with the model. After hitting the Maraval Road gas station, Victoria Square, Adam Smith Square, Coco Lounge, Movie Towne's Green Park, Lapeyrouse Cemetery (<3)>

Been so busy that I haven't had time to post any new work. These shots are from last week Friday and Saturday (5 shoots in one week and I'm beat, wuss) So the first one with Verena was pretty cool because she actually wanted to looked possessed and not too glamorous. She ended up being a demonic baseball player with a hoody, scary. However, I still took some shots with her against the yellow in her "normal" state. Two totally different looks, and all done in an hour.

The second shoot was pretty simple. Sarita wanted an Indian themed look so we hopped over to my friend Jenna's apartment complex and made use of her flowers, I even did the typical peeking from behind the tree photo because I just couldn't resist. Good laughs there. Sarita's studying law and said she would sue me for deep emotional and physical damage because she got bitten by ants. A lawyer with a good sense of humour. Totally unrelated to the pictures, there was this jogger who kept passing us every two minutes and we wondered how on earth he made it around the complex so fast. We decided that he was cheating and cutting in between the buildings to macco what we were doing.

Some photos from yesterday's shoot with Venetia. I swear she should quit her day job and just model. Did a few simple shots with a blue backdrop, then drove around Goodwood Park looking for a nice brick wall to give a sort of Sin City effect. Didn't find one though. In my own time I'd go looking for one but I had the client and her boyfriend following me in their car, and well, I didn't want them going in circles with me and wasting good daylight. So I found this stone wall and we did the rest of the shoot there. Saw a few heads pop out from behind fences as a few people wondered what I was doing with their neighbour's wall.

Was very busy this weekend gone, did two shoots - one was Egyptian themed and one was done in a park nearby. I love themed shoots so I had a blast making the crown and looking for a location to do it. Midway through the shoot the beads were falling off so I was impatiently waiting for the glue gun to keep reheating. This happened about 4 times until I decided that masking tape was a better option. I had to downplay the colour of the crown a bit as it was blindingly gold, but in the end I was happy with everything, except the bugs that bit the crap out of my legs.

The second shoot was supposed to be only portraits but we decided to go to a park a few blocks down the road and make use of the broken playground there. It was an extremely hot day and I think I lost about 5 pounds alone from melting.

Had a shoot on Sunday with Krystal Ribeiro as the model, Gylla Krogh doing makeup, and Jonathan Krogh supplying me with his brand new custom made guitar (and a raggedy old one as well). Location was Lapeyrouse Cemetery in Port-of-Spain. First time I had ever been there and I was blown away by this one particular mausoleum. There was no name and no date. Only the iron gate around the structure gave any information, it said "Scotland". The floor inside was broken open and a curious peak inside showed a mass amount of garbage and who knows what else lying at the bottom. We stayed until closing time which was about 6 'o clock and I made my way home with a camera full of dark, eerie, yet mystifying shots. For a cemetery, that place was pretty relaxing and "creepy feeling" free. Only thing of concern was the crackhead on the bicycle who kept shooting us menacing stares as he peddled past.

Here are some pictures from yesterday's photoshoot with Tenika Tang. She's my main makeup artist & hair stylist, and with a quiet week crawling by I decided to use her as the main subject - "good fairy / bad fairy". We ended up getting kicked out of the BHP compound by a confused guard, but we got a good few shots even as I saw her walking towards us from the corner of my eye...
